St George’s Crypt announced as our Charity of the Year
Here at CDS, we believe no one should have to be homeless or sleeping on our streets.
So, we are delighted to announce we have chosen Leeds based homeless Charity, St George’s Crypt, as our Charity of the Year.
This is a brand-new staff lead initiative, part of our employee wellbeing programme, which builds on the many previous fundraising activities we’ve been involved in.
It also marks our commitment to corporate social responsibility and desire to make a positive social impact by supporting the wider community where our employees live and work.
Jonathan Astin, Chair of the company’s charity committee said: “We felt that St George’s Crypt could benefit more from our expertise and in turn, present more opportunities for us to support them in achieving their goals. We look forward to working together over the next year and supporting a charity that makes such a difference to the streets of our city.
The charity is also closely aligned with our corporate values, transforming organisations, changing behaviour and making a positive difference, which we look to bring to the charity and addressing the issue of homelessness.
We have some really exciting fundraising plans over the next 12 months to raise funds for St George’s Crypt. This will start with a Christmas donation appeal, which will aim to bring a little happiness to the homeless in Leeds this Christmas.”
St George’s Crypt provides 24/7 emergency accommodation as well as rehabilitation for men and women who are homeless or sleeping rough in Leeds. They also provide services to Leeds General Infirmary and St James’ hospitals. In one year, they:
- had 10,920 beds occupied
- provided 12,382 hot showers
- gave out 13,683 items of clothing
- served 65,700 hot meals
There are still many people sleeping rough on the streets of Leeds. A recent local authority study found that on one night in November, the number of people sleeping on the streets in Leeds had risen from 10 in 2015 to 28 in 2017. This did not include people in hostels or shelters.
Cheryl Harrington, Lead Fundraiser, St George’s Crypt said: "Thank you to CDS for selecting St George’s Crypt as your Charity of the Year. We rely largely on donations and the support of our community to help us deliver essential services to homeless and vulnerable adults in Leeds. Your support will help us ensure we have the essential supplies to give to those people who are most in need.”
Mark Gair, Managing Director, CDS said: “No one should have to be homeless or sleeping rough in any of our cities. It’s a social challenge where we believe as a communications agency we can make very real and positive difference, through both fund raising and our agency’s creative, print and digital services. We look forward to supporting St George’s Crypt in their mission to provide care, compassion and hope to the homeless and vulnerable in Leeds.”

Why inclusive communications are important
